A “software glitch” in a county in Michigan has been corrected, giving at least 6,000 votes mistakenly cast for Joe Biden back to President Donald Trump. Similar glitches have been found in dozens of other counties, and if they are all fixed, it may give Michigan and its 16 electoral college votes back to Trump.
Antrim County in northern Michigan mistakenly classified at least 6,000 Republican votes as Democratic. In the presumed final count, Biden was leading by around 3,000 votes. The revised totals show that Trump actually won the county by a margin of a little under 2,500 votes.
The county has been a reliable bastion for the Republican Party for years now. According to Michigan Republican Party Chairperson Laura Cox, this “miscalculation” was first reported by a county clerk and was quickly corrected.
“Antrim County had to hand count all of the ballots,” said Cox in a press conference. “And these counties that use the software need to closely examine their results for similar discrepancies. The people of Michigan deserve a transparent and open process.”
Following a short investigation, at least 47 other counties may have also been affected by similar glitches in their software, causing Republicans to lose a currently unidentified number of votes. “The American people need to have confidence in our elections,” said national Republican party chairperson Ronna McDaniel. “Right now, we don’t have that because, across the country, Democrat officials are shutting down transparency, especially here in the state of Michigan. Democrats are damaging the country in [their desire for] a smooth transition of power by not allowing a transparent process.”
McDaniel said that Republican Party poll watchers were denied access to ballot counting centers all across the state, despite the fact that instances of irregularities were reported in more than one county. In Wayne County, for example, there were at least 100 incident reports of irregularities that McDaniel said need to be pursued and investigated.

Reports of glitches in the election software have not gone unnoticed by the state legislature, both houses of which are controlled by the Republican Party. In fact, Michigan House Speaker Lee Chatfield said that they would hold hearings on Saturday, Nov. 7, to look into whether the anomalies were caused by election fraud, a malfunctioning system or human error.
“Every single legal vote needs to be counted, regardless of who cast it or who they voted for,” said Chatfield. “And then the candidate who wins the most of those votes will win Michigan’s electoral votes, just like it always has been. Nothing about that process will change in 2020.”
The hearings will be led by the State House and Senate’s oversight committees. They will look into answering questions that the people of Michigan have regarding accusations of election fraud, typos and software glitches during the election.
Senate Minority Leader Jim Ananich, a Democrat representing Flint, does not believe Chatfield should be holding any hearings regarding the election. He called it “a very sad development” that only serves to confuse Michiganders even more during an already chaotic election.
“President Trump won the election [in Michigan] by 10,000 votes in 2016 and Democrats took it like adults,” said Ananich in a statement. “This time, Vice President Biden won by nearly 15 times Trump’s margin, but Republicans are choosing to side with conspiracy theorists and abuse the power of the Legislature in an attempt to soothe their bruised egos.”
Once every single error in Michigan’s systems has been cleared, Trump may well be declared the actual winner of the state’s electoral college votes. It is unclear if this will be enough to help the Republican Party’s Senate candidate, African American businessman and Iraq War veteran John James, defeat the Democratic incumbent. However, these errors have been able to help at least one Republican candidate.
In Oakland County in southeastern Michigan, initial results showed incumbent Republican County Commissioner Adam Kochenderfer losing the race for the 15th County Commission District by a razor-thin margin of just 104 votes.
“I thought that was that,” said Kochenderfer. “Those were the results, and I said I would not seek a recount.” The stunned incumbent believed that he had lost a seat in a district that was thought to be a Republican stronghold.
On Thursday, he received a call from Oakland County’s director of elections informing him that the seat had flipped back after the errors were fixed.
“Apparently, there was a technical glitch,” said a chuckling Kochenderfer, “and so I actually ended up winning by a little over 1,100 votes.”
While he is happy about the results, he’s concerned that there may be more errors that need to be fixed, and he wants to make sure this doesn’t happen in future elections.
“People are acting like fixing our elections is a partisan thing when it shouldn’t be.”
