Former President Barack Obama and former First Lady Michelle Obama endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris’ bid for the White House on Friday, July 26.
The Harris campaign announced the endorsement with a video showing the vice president on a phone call with the Obamas. In the video, Michelle Obama expressed her pride in Harris and described the upcoming election as “historic,” before the former president shared their endorsement.
“We called to say, Michelle and I couldn’t be prouder to endorse you and do everything we can to get you through this election and into the Oval Office,” Barack Obama said.
The Obamas, two of the most popular figures in the Democratic Party, had been the most prominent holdouts as the rest of the party quickly coalesced around Harris this week. Barack Obama, known for his draw at events, will likely appear on the campaign trail for Harris in the lead-up to November.
Harris and Barack Obama have maintained contact over the years, with the former president often serving as a sounding board since her days as California state attorney general. They have communicated multiple times in recent days as Harris sought to rally support for her nomination after President Joe Biden exited the race and endorsed her. On the call, Obama acknowledged that Democrats are “going to be underdogs” and emphasized that Harris will have to earn the trust of voters across the country.
“We’re absolutely confident that you’re gonna be able to make it happen. And I wanna make sure that, you know, we’re sending a message out to not just Democrats but every American – Democrat, Republican, Independent and especially young people – that the stakes are high. And your vision for a generous, inclusive, positive, community-minded, responsible, lawful America – that’s exactly what we need. So, I know you’re gonna be working hard, but you’re gonna have a whole bunch of folks working alongside you,” Obama said, according to excerpts of the phone call.
Barack Obama was reportedly among the top Democratic officials privately urging Biden to reconsider his candidacy in the weeks following a disastrous debate performance. However, the former president refrained from endorsing Harris in recent days, a move that infuriated some Democrats.
Obama’s delay was intentional, according to a person familiar with his thinking, who noted that the former president did not want to interject with an endorsement while the party determined its nominee process.
This endorsement is expected to significantly bolster Harris’ campaign, as the Obamas remain influential figures within the Democratic Party. Their support is likely to energize the Democratic base and attract undecided voters, giving Harris a crucial advantage as she campaigns for the presidency.
The endorsement comes at a pivotal moment in Harris’ campaign, as she aims to unify the party and present a strong challenge in the upcoming election. With the backing of the Obamas, Harris is poised to make a compelling case to the American electorate, emphasizing her vision for a united and inclusive nation.
NBC News reported that Barack Obama has been in regular contact with Harris throughout the week, providing counsel on how to rapidly build up her campaign operation using the staff, money and logistics from Biden’s campaign. Later this summer and fall, both Obamas are expected to hit the campaign trail to energize Democratic voters, many of whom are already enthusiastic about Harris.
Both Barack and Michelle Obama are almost certain to receive prominent speaking slots at the Democratic Party’s upcoming convention in Chicago in August, which will be the party’s first in-person convention since 2016.
