During an appearance on Fox News‘ “The Ingraham Angle” with Laura Ingraham, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis said the federal government is obstructing the state’s efforts to look into the recent second assassination attempt against former President Donald Trump.
“Our investigators were rebuffed just going to the fence line outside of Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach,” DeSantis told host Laura Ingraham.
“The answer’s no, they’re not being cooperative,” the governor responded when she asked if federal agents were cooperating with state investigators on Ryan Routh, Trump’s second would-be assassin. “I think they’ve taken the position that they don’t want the State of Florida to be involved in this. But here’s the thing: there were multiple violations of Florida law across multiple jurisdictions … so we have to investigate this,” he insisted.
DeSantis previously said he would launch his own criminal investigation into the assassination attempt on Trump. According to the Florida governor, state prosecutors will pursue the most serious charges available under state law, including attempted murder, in the state-level investigation into Routh.
“We have a very strong interest in holding this suspect accountable,” DeSantis told reporters.
Meanwhile, Routh has been charged with the attempted assassination of Trump following the Sept. 15 incident at Trump’s golf club after a Miami grand jury returned the indictment on Tuesday, Sept. 24.
Authorities said Routh had waited outside the fence line of the golf course for nearly 12 hours while the former president was playing. A Secret Service agent doing a security sweep a hole ahead of the Republican presidential nominee spotted the barrel of a rifle pointing in their direction, prompting the agent to open fire.
Routh attempted to flee and was later captured at a nearby interstate. The attempted assassination charge carries a maximum sentence of life in prison.
Apart from the golf course incident, Trump also narrowly avoided death at a campaign rally in Pennsylvania in July, when a bullet fired from around 150 meters away by Thomas Matthew Crooks grazed his ear. The incident left one attendee dead and injured two others before the gunman was shot dead by a sniper.
On his own social media platform Truth Social, Trump demanded that DeSantis take over the prosecution of Routh as the Department of Justice (DOJ) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) are going easy on the suspect.
“Our justice system is corrupt and discredited,” he said. “Let Florida handle the case.”
The former president claimed that both agencies are conspiring to “downplay” the charges against Routh.
“The charges brought against the maniac assassin are a slap on the wrist,” Trump wrote, referring to the weapons charges prosecutors filed against Routh to keep him in custody as they continue their investigation.
He further alleged that the DOJ and FBI have a “conflict of interest” since they have been obsessed with “getting Trump” for so long.
“It’s very difficult to trust the Biden/Harris DOJ/FBI to investigate the assassination attempts, due to Election Interference and the fake cases brought against me, including their control over local [district attorneys] DAs and [attorneys general] AGs.”
He also pointed out how FBI Director Christopher Wray went before Congress after the first assassination attempt in Butler, Pennsylvania, and falsely said that it may not have been a bullet. Wray claimed that ‘it was just glass or shrapnel.”
“It’s a lie condemned by even my worst enemies. What he said was disgraceful, especially since it was witnessed live by millions of people and he was forced to immediately retract,” he said.
He further argued that if the DOJ and FBI cannot do their job honestly and without bias and hold the aspiring assassin responsible to the full extent of the law, “DeSantis and the State of Florida have already agreed to take the lead on the investigation and prosecution.”
